Where to find the best fish and chips in North Yorkshire

02 October 2017

Fish and chips

Whilst the last few decades have seen the range of food available to us in Britain expand greatly, many people believe that one of our most traditional dishes – fish and chips – is probably still the best-loved of all.

We think that nothing can quite beat that first taste of freshly battered cod or haddock accompanied by golden, hand-cut chips and a sizeable dollop of mushy peas.

For this reason, we’ve decided to put together a list of our three favourite fish and chip restaurants and takeaways in the county of North Yorkshire – a place which is perhaps more obsessed with this classic meal than anywhere else in the UK!

Read on to find out why you should definitely look to visit one (or all!) of these lovely choices when you next stay at a Whitby, Scarborough or Robin Hood’s Bay country house hotel.

QUAYSIDE

The Fusco family have been providing delicious fish and chips to the town of Whitby for half a century, so it should come as no surprise that they are regarded by locals as true experts in their field.

We were glad that the family took the time to tell us a little more about what makes one of their most popular ventures, Quayside, the great success that it is today:

“Quayside is a family owned and managed restaurant and take-away, situated in the heart of the fishing port of Whitby. Quayside is run by the Fusco family, who have had fish and chip shops in the town for almost 50 years.

“The family goes to every effort to make Quayside the best fish and chip experience possible and in 2014 the shop was crowned Fish and Chip Shop of the Year. Every portion of fish is hand prepared and the chips are freshly prepared each morning, so everything is checked by the Quayside team.

“The Fusco family are now in the third generation of fish frying and continually fine-tune procedures to perfect the product they love so much. For more information, please visit www.quaysidewhitby.co.uk.”

MILLER’S

Amazingly, our next choice belongs to a fish and chip family who have been frying for even longer – 75 years – which is proof of just how strong the range of seafood takeaways in the North Yorkshire area is.

Here’s what the team behind Miller’s, in the town of Haxby, had to say about their first-rate food and drink:

“Miller’s Fish & Chips is an award-winning, 4th generation family-run restaurant and takeaway located in Haxby, North Yorkshire.

“Miller’s came Top 3 in the National Fish and Chip awards last year and have just been announced North East winners once again, with their passion for seafood creating waves in their industry. The Haxby based ‘chippy’ uses only the finest, locally-sourced ingredients in their products and with a strong belief in responsible, sustainable fishing, they only supply fish that is MSC certified. The team actively engages with their local community in a bid to encourage, educate and inspire future generations about the sustainability of the oceans.

“With an indoor seating area and takeaway options available, Miller’s regularly update their menu to cater for a variety of different dietary options, including halal, vegetarian and gluten-free. They are also fully licensed to serve alcohol and recently started supplying BrewDog beer, which is going down a treat with local customers!

“Miller’s most popular dish has got to be their delicious, freshly fried haddock, served with chips made with the finest locally sourced potatoes. They’re representing the region in the finals of the National Fish and Chip Awards again in January 2018 – let’s hope this time they bring back the trophy!”

MISTER C’S

Our final choice is yet another award-winning restaurant: Mister C’s in the town of Selby, which is just under 15 miles outside of York.

Like the two locations discussed above, Mister C’s has enjoyed recognition at the ‘Oscars of the fish and chip world’, the National Fish and Chip Awards. Earlier this year, the restaurant was recognised as a top 5 finalist in the ‘Independent’ category, and won the North East Regional Independent Takeaway award in both 2015 and 2016.

Mister C’s is yet another example of North Yorkshire’s fine fish and chip heritage, with the restaurant and takeaway now having been open for over 35 years – and they proudly claim to still use the same batter recipe today as they did in 1981!

The restaurant has also made a name for itself catering for external events so, if you fancy ordering the nation’s favourite meal for your upcoming birthday, wedding or other celebration in North Yorkshire, just give the team a call.
