Yorkshire Day is around the corner, and we can’t wait to celebrate our amazing county and all its triumphs! But with some level of lockdown restrictions still likely to be in place come August 1st, we thought we’d look at some of the ways you can celebrate Yorkshire Day at home with some great suggestions from Yorkshire-based bloggers.

So, whack the kettle on, get a mug of Yorkshire Tea brewing and read on to find out how you can still celebrate our brilliant county from the comfort of your home.

Sample some local food and drink

What better way to celebrate Yorkshire Day than indulging in some of the best local food and drink around? Whether you’re planning a traditional roast with all the trimmings or finger foods with a local brew, you know your taste buds are in for a treat.

“We are planning a Yorkshire wine and cheese party at home,” says Nikki, blogger at Best Things To Do In York. “I have a bottle of Latimer white wine from the Yorkshire Heart Vineyard and will be pairing this with a crumbly Wensleydale, some Yorkshire Charcoal Cheese (sounds weird, tastes great!), Ribblesdale Goats Cheese and a bit of Yorkshire Blue!”

What would be Yorkshire Day without homemade Yorkshire puddings? Adventures of a Yorkshire Mum Michaela will be making sure to include some in her feast: “We will be celebrating by having loads of Yorkshire foods. Usually, I opt for a joint of beef in a mustard glaze, wrapped in Wensleydale cheese and ham, with Yorkies (Yorkshire Puddings) on the side. We will then have some parkin for dessert.”

Louise, who blogs at A Mum In Yorkshire, will be having a picnic in her garden so she can celebrate with her neighbours: “Our favourite place for brunch uses amazing Yorkshire produce. We are ordering some grazing boxes from them and having a picnic in the front garden, so we can see some of our elderly neighbours at a safe distance.”

After enjoying some local foods, you’ll want to round off your feast with a local tipple, says Typewriter Teeth blogger, Amber. “I recommend celebrating with a Yorkshire gin tasting. From Sheffield Dry Gin, Leeds Gin, Hooting Owl, Masons and Cooper King you can sample the county from your own home.”

Video chat with your loved ones

For those family members you can’t be with on Yorkshire Day, why not get together over video? Whether you just want to catch up over a cuppa or make it a fun games night, Yorkshire Day is the perfect time to connect with loved ones.

Bee Money Savvy blogger Emma told us how her family are planning to (virtually) celebrate the occasion: “Due to COVID-19, my family and I have been having weekly quiz nights via video call. To celebrate Yorkshire Day, we’re planning an extra special Yorkshire-themed virtual quiz night!”

Make some Yorkshire Day crafts and decoration

If you’re having a party, you’ll want to make sure you decorate your home with some homemade crafts. Bunting, posters and even wearable crafts are sure to be a hit with your kids and a great excuse to spend time together.

As Yorkshire’s county symbol is a white rose, blogger Sarah at The Penniless Parent has a great craft idea that she will be doing with her children this year: “We will be making rose crowns in keeping with Yorkshire Day this year, created using from floristry wire and fresh roses from the garden.”

Support local musicians

If you’re planning a night of Yorkshire food, drink and celebration, you’ll want your music to be all things Yorkshire too.

Sarah recommends listening to Yorkshire musicians in order to support the local talent. As well as this, she told us: “You might also want to check out this collaboration of musicians from Scarborough who’ve performed a song for our Yorkshire heroes.”

The song, ‘Yorkshire Heroes’, was written and performed by local Scarborough musicians to say a big thank you to Yorkshire’s frontline workers and those working to keep everyone safe during COVID-19.

So, on Yorkshire Day, take a minute to give this song a special listen and be thankful for all the hard work of Yorkshire’s brave frontliners.

Explore Yorkshire’s natural beauty

So not technically an at-home suggestion, but if you are currently living in Yorkshire or the surrounding counties, why not get out and explore some areas of this phenomenal county? Afterall, Yorkshire is home to some of the best walks and scenery in the UK, and Yorkshire Day is the perfect time to appreciate this phenomenal county’s natural beauty.

“We are planning on spending Yorkshire Day exploring somewhere new,” Carley from Unicorn Puffs and Rainbows told us. “Having lived in Yorkshire for over half of my life, I find it amazing how much I still have left to explore. Since we have been in lockdown, I have missed the coast so much and I am hoping to discover more of it now enjoying fish and chips on the beach – what better way to spend Yorkshire Day?”

Mom Of Two Little Girls blogger Carly will also be venturing out with her family on Yorkshire Day.

“We love our adopted home county of Yorkshire. We are planning a walk somewhere local to enjoy the Yorkshire countryside. We recently ‘discovered’ the Hough near Hambleton and it’s our current favourite little woodland walk to enjoy.”

You could even include a picnic on your walk, which is what blogger Leyla from This Day I Love will be doing on the big day. “We’ve been shielding and missed spending time out in the Yorkshire countryside. Given Yorkshire Day is close to my daughter’s birthday (a Yorkshire lass!), she’s asked for a picnic in the Yorkshire countryside followed by fishing in the Dearne.”

Even if you can’t head to your local on Yorkshire Day, that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate this brilliant day in style in the comfort of your own home. Hopefully, the above ideas will give you some inspiration on making it one to remember.
