Why Yorkshire is perfect for a staycation
24 September 2020
The UK has a whole wealth of holiday opportunities for every kind of traveller, and one of the silver linings regarding the on-going pandemic is more and more people looking closer to home for a holiday. From stunning Scarborough hotels to amazing historical features, the UK has plenty on offer and although it may not be privy to sunnier climes or tropical vistas, it does have some truly breathtaking features.
We may be biased, but we think Yorkshire is one of the best places in the UK for a staycation, and in this article, we tell you why.
FILLED WITH AMAZING HISTORY
The UK as a whole is filled with amazing historical attractions due to its turbulent and long-standing past. Yorkshire is home to a great amount of history, including being home to the oldest pub in the UK, the location where the date for Easter was fixed, and it was even once the governing location of the entire Roman Empire!
Visitors to Yorkshire can enjoy three World Heritage Sites, as well as myriad museums and even more national historical attractions. From the stunning Fountains Abbey, the best-preserved Cistercian abbey in Britain to Saltaire Village, a Victorian model village, there is a copious amount of history to indulge in.

THE LARGEST COUNTY IN THE UK
More space doesn’t only mean better social distancing, but it means more landscapes, more attractions and more of everything else. As the largest county in the UK, Yorkshire benefits from three National Parks, 90 miles of stunning coastline and 38 mountains. As well as that, you can enjoy seven cities, so whether you are a lover of the country or drawn to more urban attractions, you’ll find exactly what you are looking for here.
We spoke to Faith Archer from Much More with Much Less who told us about her recent staycation in Yorkshire: “We loved our staycation in Yorkshire. A fantastic combination of beautiful countryside, unspoilt beaches, charming towns and historic monuments to explore. The swirling seabirds at Bempton Cliffs, market in Beverley, gardens and playground at Sledmere House and fab beach at Fraishorpe were particular highlights. So much to enjoy outside as a family – and less crowded than many places along the South Coast!”
INCREDIBLE FOOD AND DRINKS
Great, British food is warming, cosy, and the edible equivalent of a warm hug. And you’ll be pleased to know that many British favourites hail from right here in Yorkshire. From the aptly named Yorkshire pudding to Wensleydale Cheese, the savoury food scene is immense. If you are looking for something sweet, never fear as not only is Yorkshire home to the so-called ‘rhubarb triangle’, but also parkin, a spicy gingerbread cake and its own custard tart.
How can we talk about the food in Yorkshire without talking about the drinks? Of course, Yorkshire is home to the best brew in the country, but more than that it is also great for those who like the odd tipple.
We spoke to Victoria, The Harrogate Girl, who mentions the food and drink as one of her reasons why Yorkshire is a great staycation destination: “There’s nowt quite like a trip to Yorkshire, where tea will make everything better, you’re never too far away from a good pint, pie and pea, and the scenery will knock your socks off. Whether it be family fun on one of our stunning beaches or the bright lights of the medieval city of York, Yorkshire has a little bit of something for everyone.”

UNBEATABLE LANDSCAPES
You don’t preside over three National Parks to not be adorned with truly unbeatable landscapes. With amazing scenery that has inspired some of England’s most famous writers, all across the county you can enjoy stunning scenes. For hikers, walkers or even cyclists, there is no better place for an active holiday. In fact, we think enjoying a day exploring the Yorkshire Dales is one of the best ways to spend a day in the whole of Britain.
BREATHTAKING BEACHES
It’s not just the in-land landscapes that are a real treat, the Yorkshire coastline is stunning. Laced with tiny fishing villages, rugged cliff faces and unbeatable beaches; for those who like to spend their holiday by the water, Yorkshire is the ticket.
Our hotel is lucky enough to overlook one of the most significant parts of Yorkshire’s coastline, Robin Hoods’ Bay. With ancient traditions of pirates and smuggling and a number of fossils found on its shore, it’s a fascinating destination, to say the least! And, even if that doesn’t tickle your fancy, the beautiful bay will surely take your breath away.

CONSTANTLY EVOLVING
One of the most remarkable things about Yorkshire is, despite the fact it has an amazing history, unbeatable landscapes and more, it is always evolving and becoming better. Every time you visit, you’ll not only find the aspects you loved, but you’ll find more features to fall in love with as well.
Yorkshire native Christina from Yorkshire Velvet told us how Yorkshire has got more to offer a traveller than ever before: “The tourism industry in Yorkshire has really upped its game in the last 10 years. We’ve always had the breathtaking landscapes and stunning coastline but now there’s so much more in the mix: Michelin-starred restaurants (the most in any location outside of London) vibrant market towns with on-the-pulse micro-breweries and bars, world-class hotels and boutique accommodation, surfing and star-gazing. Not to mention some of the best cycling and walking routes in the UK. Every generation will find something or somewhere in this county to delight and thrill.”
