6 Romantic things to do in Yorkshire
23 July 2019

The Yorkshire charm, beautiful scenery and impressive cities are just some of the reason why this county is a hot spot for romance. With plenty of activities to choose from that will suit all kinds of different couples, Yorkshire is the perfect destination for your next romantic getaway. Read our guide to discover just some of the romantic things to do during your stay.
GO TO THE SEASIDE

For the couple who wants to kick back, relax and enjoy some quality time together, visit the northern seaside. Grab a pair of flip flops, a beach towel and a picnic and head to one of Yorkshire’s most charming beaches, Robin Hood’s Bay. The old fishing village situated on the waterfront is the perfect romantic location if you love cosy pub lunches, sea views and a quieter pace of life. When staying at a Robin Hood Bay hotel, be sure to make the most of the bay’s natural beauty and take a romantic stroll along the nearby coastal paths.
If you love the beach but you and your partner prefer more of a lively atmosphere, you can travel just thirty minutes down the road from Robin Hood’s Bay to Scarborough beach, which has been one of the most popular seaside resorts in the UK since the 1930s. You’ll have two sandy bays to choose from, as well as amusement arcades and shops along the waterfront to keep you entertained. Stop by the Seastrand, an independent café overlooking Scarborough’s South Bay, which is a romantic spot to enjoy some tea and cake.
We spoke to Tess from the team at Seastrand who tells us: “We are a quiet, relaxed little coffee shop with a roof terrace that overlooks the beach, castle, harbour and cliffs- so it’s perfectly positioned for a date! There are blankets to snuggle under when the weather has a chill and the ground floor snug is festooned with sparkly lights and a plush vintage Chesterfield to sink into. Plus, there are lovely coffee and treats to be enjoyed.”
Tess from Seastrand tells us what she recommends couples get up to in Yorkshire to spark some romance: “I think that being beside the sea for long walks, chatting and dodging waves is just wonderful, there’s something magic in the sea air. Otherwise walking the Dales, Moors and cliff top walkways would be top of my list.”
VISIT THE OPEN AIR THEATRE
The Scarborough Open Air Theatre is the perfect place to go if you and your partner are music enthusiasts. Look at the line-up of acts and plan your trip in time to witness one of your favourite musicians perform at this unique venue. The theatre was built in the 1930s, back when seaside resorts were at their most popular but in 2010, it had a major refurbishment which was officially opened by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
HOP ABOARD THE NORTH YORK MOORS RAILWAY

Hop aboard the North York Moors Railway for a truly unique romantic experience. The steam locomotive travels through the North York Moors, unveiling beautiful views as you and your partner relax at a window-seat table and enjoy a glass of champagne. Whilst the train travels 24 miles of stunning Yorkshire countryside, you’ll both have plenty of time to make the most of the Pullman Dining Experience. With a delicious choice of food from the seasonal menu, the setting of the luxurious carriages, and high-quality service, the North York Moors Railway is the perfect place for a romantic date.
ADVENTURE AT GO APE

For the adventurous couple, head to the Go Ape Adventures at Dalby. Experience the Yorkshire moors by flying through the forest on a zip wire or climbing amongst the treetops on an assault course. With over 8000 acres of woodland to explore, you and your partner can get active and enjoy one of the four running trails or six cycling routes.
We asked Chloe from I’m Just A Girl 16, a travel and lifestyle blog for advice on romantic things to do in Yorkshire: “Yorkshire does have lots of romantic charm and unique things to do as well as being home to a plethora of romantic hotels. Some of my favourite out-of-the-box date ideas include a weekend at Leeds Festival, visiting a theme park and an adventure-based date at Go Ape.”
EXPLORE THE CITY OF YORK

Yorkshire is nothing if not diverse, as you have the choice between the glorious coastline or the lively cities, including York. With picturesque Georgian architecture and plenty of things to do, York is perhaps one of the most romantic cities on offer.
Forget buying your partner a box of chocolates and instead, take them to a city that’s chocolate obsessed. KitKat, Smarties and Terry’s Chocolate Orange are just some of the major products that were created in York, and even now the city still prides itself on a rich history in Chocolate. You can even explore the city through the York Chocolate Trail.
Whether you enjoy shopping or not, the Shambles shopping street in York is well worth a visit. What was once filled door-to-door with butchers, Shambles is now full of independent shops, boutiques and cafés whilst it remains one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. The quaint street is full of character, and it even inspired Diagon Alley from the Harry Potter books and films.
We asked Elisha from Elisha Blogs, a travel and lifestyle blog, for her recommendations on romantic things to do in Yorkshire, she tells us: “I recommend couples visit York for a romantic getaway. Grab a coffee and take a morning stroll around the city walls, catch a river cruise and then enjoy a drink looking out over the river from one of the many beer gardens.
“See a show at the theatre or hop on one of the many ghost walks for a bit of entertainment. Enjoy some shopping down the cobbled streets and eat at one of the many lovely restaurants. Last time I ate at Lucia’s and I felt like I was on holiday eating on their patio terrace.”
York is a popular spot for romance, Chloe from I’m Just a Girl 16 also adds: “Some of my favourite romantic things to do in Yorkshire is a walk around York City Walls and then enjoy a cocktail night out.”
WANDER THROUGH LAVENDER FIELDS

A bouquet has nothing compared to a field full of flowers, which makes Yorkshire Lavender the ideal location for a romantic walk. Wander fields of purple through the lavender maze and gardens, before exploring the plant nursery and browsing the gift shop. Yorkshire Lavender creates their own products from the extracts of the lavender plants grown on their farm, including sleeping oils and bubble baths. The family-run business covers 60 acres of land and they also run a popular tearoom, so be sure to pop in for a bite to eat.
Whether you’re looking for somewhere to go on a first weekend away together, celebrating an anniversary or looking for a honeymoon destination, there is something for every couple to enjoy in this beautiful county. Elisa explains why Yorkshire is the perfect romantic destination: “It has the best of both worlds – cosmopolitan glamour and the laid-back joys of being out in nature with stunning views. I’d recommend a break to Yorkshire for any couples looking to spend quality time with each other. After all, it’s not called ‘God’s own country’ for nothing!”
