A guide to the best Halloween events in Yorkshire

Halloween is just around the corner and this time of the year is a great time to go on a holiday in the UK. The kids are off school on their half-term holidays, and families get the chance to go on a break before Christmas arrives.

When thinking about potential places to stay over the Halloween period, Yorkshire should certainly be in your thoughts. The area is home to a number of great Halloween events, as well as offering visitors affordable accommodation to stay in, such as cheap Scarborough hotels.

NORTH YORKSHIRE MOORS RAILWAY

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway are working with Make A Wish Entertainment this spooky Halloween and will be running three Halloween Story Trains from 30th-31st October.

The special Story Train, which will have witches and wizards on board, will depart from Pickering Station and will head to Grosmont Station, where entertainment for the whole family is provided by the Make A Wish characters before heading back to Pickering, where prizes will be given for the best fancy dress outfits.

SCARBOROUGH SEA LIFE SANCTUARY

This Halloween and October Half Term the Scarborough SEA LIFE Sanctuary will be running its brand new Face Your Fears event, featuring creepy crawlies and scary, scaly beasts!

Visitors will embark on a terror-ific quiz trail around the sanctuary and will learn all about the amazing creatures at the centre, including Daisy the American Alligator, John the Reticulated Python and much, much more!

Adults can hold tarantulas and scorpions in a one-of-a kind handling session. The SEA LIFE Sanctuary will host two daily shows from 26th October-1st November.

FALSGRAVE PARK

Falsgrave Park is a large green space that normally attracts thousands of people because of its stunning coastal views and large woodland areas, but this Halloween the Friends of Falsgrave Park will be holding their hugely popular Halloween event.

On 31st October from 6.15pm there will be lots of family fun, including ghost stories, a potions lab, wand workshop and guided haunted walks. There will also be a fancy dress and carved pumpkin lantern competition on 29th October at Scarborough Council’s Manor Road Nurseries, so make sure you have your best Halloween makeup and fancy dress outfits available.

LIGHTWATER VALLEY

All manner of creepy ghouls and beasties will be lurking within Frightwater Valley at Lightwater Valley this Halloween, so make sure you tread scarefully!

Visitors to the park will be able to experience a whole host of Mini, Mega and Ultimate scares, but remember… the darker the night, the scarier the fright!

The attractions at Lightwater Valley this Halloween include Trick or Treat Doors, a Monster Puppet Show, the Lightwater Scare Train Express, Cabin in the Woods, Eagles’ Creep Farm, The Crypt experience, and the blood-curdling Frightwater Finale. These special Halloween events will be available from 30th October – 1st November 2015, whilst all the theme park rides will also be open.

WHITBY ABBEY

What better way is there to spend Halloween than the place that was the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s gothic tale of Dracula?

Whitby Abbey is certainly a must-visit place this Halloween, especially as there will be a number of activities taking place.

From 24th October – Sunday 1st November, Whitby Abbey will be putting on a number of spooky stories, activities and craft workshops. On 28th-31st October light will be cast on a dark history as the Abbey will be illuminated and costumed characters will introduce the darker side of the past with tales of grave robbing and witch trials. There will also be a live performance of Dracula to complete the visit.

YORK’S CHOCOLATE STORY

This Halloween (26th October – 1st November), York’s Chocolate Story is inviting daring guests to take part in a thrilling spook-tacular shock-olate tasting session.

Visitors can also try their luck by having a go at the ‘Shock-olate wheel of fortune’ and receive either a tasty treat, like a toffee-apple, pumpkin spice and cinder toffee, or a ghastly trick chocolate, like brussel-sprout, stilton and garlic flavoured chocolates.

To celebrate the fact that York is supposed to be the most haunted city in the UK, York’s Chocolate Story will be given a creepy makeover too.

BRODSWORTH HALL & GARDENS

If you are staying in hotels at Robin Hoods Bay and need some more Halloween ideas for your visit to Yorkshire, then why not take the family to Brodsworth Hall & Gardens in South Yorkshire?

This Halloween half term (24th October – Sunday 1st November) there will be all kinds of spooky fun at Brodsworth Hall, including creepy crafts, spooky activities and Victorian Ghost Story Tours, which will take place from Friday 30th -31st October.

STOCKELD PARK

The award-winning Halloween Adventure at Stockeld Park opens on 21st October and visitors will be able to experience the Magical Enchanted Forest.

Visitors can also try Nordic Skiing, explore and interact in a Giant Yew Tree Maze and glide over the Real Ice Rink. Special ghoulish fun and events for the Halloween Adventure include a brand new Witches trail through the forest, Wizard and Witch Training, and scary Fright Nights.

On 1st November there will be a firework spectacular, whilst each day there will be a prize for the best dressed visitor in Stockeld Park’s Halloween Catwalk.

There will be a prize for best dressed on our daily Halloween Catwalk, and don’t forget our home-grown Pumpkin Patch! Look out for the Halloween Disco on Ice!

THORNTON HALL COUNTRY PARK

Enjoy a freak-tastic day out this Halloween at Thornton Hall Farm. Visitors can enjoy haunted mazes, a safari adventure, freaky face painting, a haunted barn experience, a lamb and calf feeding special with Farmer Dracula, Pumpkin Carving, the Creepy Crawley Caterpillar and lots more.

There are also special activities planned to celebrate Halloween, such as Tiny Trumpets music, Free Pony Rides, Halloween Crafts, and Hartbeeps music to name but a few.
